It has warm colours outlining what is a representation of an Ancient Greek vase, depicting nude, round people engaging in Ancient Greek Olympic sports (such as throwing a disk, a javalin and you also see someone running with a torch). The image has an electric colour scheme, with a vibrant blue background which emphasises all the energy that the music is drenched in. The album cover art, created by their drummer, Gil Goletski, not only is aesthetically pleasing, but fits with the music perfectly. On stage, you can see Mayhew twisting and turning the knobs on the synth to change the pitch of the note, phasing you to different places making you visualise more settings and colours than a guitar would be able to. It has a psychedelic but electrifying sound. ![]() It doesn’t just substitute the guitar, it gives more than the guitar would be able to. Then, as soon as you are about to start clapping (if you’re watching them live- which you must), they surprise you and pull you back into their magical universe.Īs a trio with drums and bass, you would expect a guitar as the third instrument, however YEP once again surprises us with synth keys, played by Madison Mayhew. YEP’s dynamics range from a mysteriously captivating “piano” level up to a “fortissimo” ear-quake which is occasionally interrupted by a rest that is just long enough for you to wonder whether the song is finished or not. ![]() The pure, jaw-dropping incredibility of how tight they are as an ensemble, as well as the catchy diatonic sections that you might recognise from an earlier moment in the song keep you grounded. The first time you hear them you feel destabilised as they go up and down and jump around chromatic scales with unexpected changes in the time signature. The nature of the music is chromatic and irregular rhythmically but it all ties together in harmony and in sync. This contrast is charming and comical in a self-deprecating way, just like their stage banter! I will go through the different elements in their music, lyrics and accompanying visuals that make YEP a band that deserves your time, attention, admiration and love! Even their band name seems to convey humility, as it is possibly a fedora tip to legendary prog-rock band, Yes and “yep” is a more informal way of saying “yes”. ![]() YEP is a group of humble yet charismatic, creative characters highly skilled at their instruments. A synth-prog-punk-rock band with psychedelic and jazz influences, consisting of Gil Goletski’s explosive drumming, Madison Mayhew’s electrifying keys and Craig Stensrud’s piercing bass.
